Trip Report - The Dinner Plate Wreck

Rocky’s eyes lit up with excitement and anticipation as he heard his leader announce that the weekend dive was to be on the ‘Biesbosch’. Buddy pairs were arranged for the party of ten who would launch SD1 and SD2 from Bridlington.

The day began well, calm seas and bright morning sunshine, and the Wreck Ferret found Rocky’s goody bag and compass on SD2, clearly left on board following the previous week’s dive. Launched on time, both RIBs set out for the wreck site only to be frustrated by a lack of a show from the sounder. PC painstakingly searched the area and eventually both a shot and the anchor were dropped. At this point the crew of SD1 (The Marksman, Blonde Mermaid, The Alchemist and Glastonbury Kid) pulled alongside to inform Rocky that he had left his fins on shore (and ask how much it was worth to keep it quiet!). Later, Rocky found he had also left his hood too. Luckily, the fins were handed over (picked up by an alert and kind-hearted SD1crew) but PC had to lend Rocky a hood.

Wreck Ferret and Marine Boy were first in followed by Rocky and Rumtumtiger, then the Marksman and Blonde Mermaid. All found themselves on sand and gravel so reeled off in search of wreckage. Two of the three pairs found the wreck and were able to convey information to the remaining divers.

PC and Boomerang and The Alchemist and Glastonbury Kid took full advantage of the earlier ‘pioneering’ work to have good dives on the Biesbosch, a Dutch steamer, built in Mrs. Rocky’s home area (Groningen), carrying general cargo that sprung a leak in 1923 and sank overnight in Bridlington Bay.

On the way back in, Rumtumtiger was admiring some copper wire or pipe that Wreck Ferret had found when she was savagely attacked by a marine bee. Now these are creatures not to be meddled with so it is very understandable that in her panic, Rumtum dropped the salvaged metal. Wreck Ferret was unusually patient (only one or two expletives were heard – he’s a softy really) when he realised that his treasure was not on the floor of the RIB but back in the bay!
