June 2010
The season has made a slow start for most
members.
The visibility at Stoney Cove has been poor throughout Spring
but there were signs of recent improvement on our last visit on May 31st.
There has not, at the time of writing, been any club RIB activity though
it was planned to give SD1 a try out on HMS Falmouth last weekend but circumstances caused a cancellation.
However, for two groups of people
there has been quite a lot of action. Derek led a small team to Oban
for a successful few days of varied diving (see reports elsewhere on the
site) and our relatively new members, who began Ocean Diver training
during the winter months, have been busily getting their qualification
dives signed off and one or two have begun Sports Diver training (see
Congratulations and Training Officer pages).
I shall be enquiring at the Hospital
Club about the availability of a room and projection facilities so that
we can plan a programme of Thursday evening Sports Diver lectures. We
already have 7 members wanting to start these. I have produced a document for
committee consideration which tackles the way in which we charge for
Nitrox fills. Now that we have an adequate number of qualified mixed
gas blenders, fills should be much easier to access. More on this at a
later date. I’d like to welcome two new members to
the branch. Chris Oliver (Scottish Chris) has joined us from another
BSAC branch after moving to Barton-on-Humber. He is Sports Diver and
has already begun his Dive Leader training with us. David Jackson lives
and works in Scunthorpe and is PADI qualified. He hopes to complete his
Divemaster with PADI which will allow him to transfer to us as Sports
Diver. In the meantime he is looking forward to some UK dive
experience. I know that the visibility at Oban was
poor but I heard from a source at the Dive Station in Hessle that a
recent trip by the Barton/Brigg SAA to the Farnes reported 12 to 15m viz!
Let’s hope it drifts down to Flamborough and Bridlington Bay. Keep an eye on the forum and other
messages for information about the provisionally booked trip to Eyemouth
in August. Sandra Longbone and I will do the organising and I will
act as Dive Manager but this time in a diving capacity – my three months
out of the water will be up at the end of July. Finally, keep us informed of your
diving activities both before the event and by sending us your dive log
sheets – you can download blank sheets from the website.
